The Horsehead Nebula in Orion

The Horsehead Nebula (Barnard 33) is a dark globule of dust and non-luminous gas, obscuring the light coming from behind (star sigma Orionis) which projects the dark shape of the head of a horse.

Image below is obtained through a Celestron refractor 102mm/f:5 (Pixcel 237 CCD, - 25 degree Celsius, 120 second exposure). North is left.

Four "raw" images, 120 second each, are digitally processed and enhanced courtesy by Larry Denmark.

Wide field image of Horsehead through a Celestron refractor (102mm/f5, 30 minutes exposure on Fujicolor 800). East from brightest star on this image, zeta Orionis, is the nebula NGC 2024.
